Three Scoring Tips for Women Golfers

Tips For Women Golfers to improve scoringOn the surface, women’s golf doesn’t seem that much different from the men’s game. Sure we play from different tees, but other than that the course is exactly the same. The fairways are the same width, the bunkers are just as deep, and the hole sure isn’t any bigger. With that said, there are some strategic differences that women need to know in order to get the most out of their games. By following these three easy tips, you can make sure you don’t leave any strokes out there during your next round.

Play the Angles

There are always exceptions, but most of the time women don’t hit the ball quite as high as their male counterparts. Since a higher shot will stop faster, we ladies need to account for a little more roll out on our approach shots. This is not necessarily a bad thing – we just need to be aware of it and plan ahead. That planning starts on the tee box. Play the hole backwards in your head and picture your approach shot. What side would be easiest to come in from? If there is a big bunker guarding the right side of the green, you are going to want to aim your drive to the left side of the fairway. Once your ball is down the left side, you will have more room to play the shot to the side of the bunker and end up safely on the putting surface.

This advice applies to golfers in general, but ladies in particular. The reality is that most of us don’t have the forearm strength of the guys we play alongside. Where this can become a factor is when we venture off the fairway and into the long grass. Hitting a long shot from deep rough is something that requires tremendous hand and forearm strength. The grass wants to grab and twist the club as soon you get down toward the ball. Rather than trying for the green and making a mess of the hole, consider playing out to the fairway and getting back on track. This way, you take the risk of making a really bad score away, and could even save par or bogey with a good approach shot and a one putt.

Hit the Driver

One area where women surely have an advantage over men is in the ability to drive the ball straight. For whatever reason, women often hit the fairway with more consistency than the men do. For that reason, keep your driver out and use it as a weapon. By trading out your driver for a three wood or iron, you give away valuable distance and don’t gain much. Take every inch you can get off the tee – it will only make your approach shots easier.

Golf is a game that pretty much treats members of both sexes the same. It is a hard game for everyone, and the golf gods certainly don’t discriminate. There are, however, some subtle differences between the genders. Use the three tips above to make sure your score next time out is as good as it can be.
