Confused About Pages vs Profiles For Businesses & Companies

Apr 12, 2013 by

Confused about pages and profilesGetting Shutdown without being advised can seem pretty cruel, though with the so many accounts not following the rules – Duplicates, Miscategorized, Solicitation – it does appear impractical for Social Channels to police these one by one, sourcing proofs and granting leniency. So to avoid this time consuming practice they just delete the account without asking. Here are a few ways to not get DELETED for breaking the Rules by following the guidelines set forth by the channel in the first place.

Choosing Pages or Profiles, which one suits you?

From Facebook FAQs:

Facebook Pages offer different features for organizations, businesses, public figures, brands and organizations. It’s also a violation of our terms to use a personal account to represent something other than yourself (ex: your business)… If you’re using your account to represent something other than yourself, you could risk permanently losing access to your account and all of its content if you don’t convert it to a Page. Learn how to get started.

If that is not enough of a decision maker for you here is the clincher:

Facebook issued an official warning in August 2012 making it clear that it will be taking more aggressive steps to remove profiles used for business purposes. As a result, millions of business owners who are incorrectly using personal Facebook profiles to market their businesses are confronted with two choices: 1) Convert your personal profile to a business Page, or 2) risk getting deleted.

Maintaining a personal account for anything other than an individual person is a violation of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. If you don’t convert your non-compliant account to a Page, you risk permanently losing access to the account and all of its content. Excerpt from that State of Rights & Responsibilities:

Facebook users provide their real names and information, and we need your help to keep it that way. Here are some commitments you make to us relating to registering and maintaining the security of your account:

4. You will not use your personal timeline for your own commercial gain (such as selling your status update to an advertiser).

Converting your Profile to a Page is a relatively simple process and requires only that you visit here and follow the steps. If you do NOT have a Personal/Individual’s Profile to manage the Page in place a Business Account will be created for you which is an account that enables login without a Profile attached to it. Once your Profile is converted to a Page you can assign Admins to help you implement and managed the daily Social Media & Content Marketing strategies for the whole Business.

The same applies to Business/Company pages on GooglePlus & LinkedIn. With so many positives reasons to take FULL advantage of these resource opportunities for your Business what possible justification do you have not to? If your Business on Facebook is STILL using a Profile instead of a Page it is time to get converted.
